Chitral is a district in the far north-west of Pakistan, on the southern flank of the Hindu Kush. Its highest peak, Tirich Mir, rises to 7,708 metres. Between the mountains, narrow river valleys hold villages, orchards and terraced fields.
The valleys
To the south-west of Chitral town lie the three Kalash valleys of Bumburet, Rumbur and Birir, home to the Kalash people, a small community with its own language and traditions. We write about them with respect, and we only describe a product as coming from a particular valley when that is true.
The seasons
Winters are cold and snow can close the high passes. Spring brings blossom to the orchards, summer brings fruit, and autumn the walnut harvest. It is a calendar that shapes everything that grows here.
